‘We used to wonder if it was possible to drive back from Tunbridge Wells and our McDonalds still be warm!’

Scott Wishart

McDonald’s, Tonbridge High Street - 1985

McDonald’s first came to the UK in 1974, when a branch opened in Woolwich, South East London. It was to be another 10 years before Tonbridge teenagers dreams came true and the American fast food giant finally arrived in town, meaning no more trips to Tunbridge Wells if you were craving a Big Mac! A year on from its opening, Scott Wishart captured this photo of the ‘new’ restaurant in its infancy. Listen to him and Anne Clement discussing their memories of the ‘new’ restaurant with James Pavlou.
